Day 202 - Gazing Into The Soul

Thoughts that have come from various quotes taken from the book, "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim Based Society" by John H. Hovis. Click here to link directly to the audio file.

**********

"God is desperate for us to see His Face. A victor isn’t looking for God’s “handouts,” he’s looking to see into the “soul” of the Father so that the victor will better understand who he is as seen through the eyes of God Himself."

As quoted from the book "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim-Based Society" by John H. Hovis Page 90.

It is said that the eyes are the window to the soul. There really is something to this statement. The eyes are such a great tell when it comes to what is going on inside. My eyes actually change color at times based on my mood.

I have always had this picture about my relationship with God. I want to be close enough to God to see my reflection in my God's eyes. I know that sounds weird but think about how powerful of a connection that would be. Wouldn't you like to see how God sees you? Wouldn't you like to look in to the eyes of the one that made you and who loves you so much?

I have to believe that if that were to happen I would never have identity problems again. I happen to think that much of the chaos that comes from our Victim Based Society results from the fact that we are searching so hard for who we are. Our search takes us to places where we just don't need to go. We end up doing things that cause damage to our own lives and to the lives of those around us. Not knowing who we are makes it possible for us to fall into victim thinking so deeply that we can become victimizers ourselves.

Oh how it would be different if we could just know who we are the way God sees us. Good news is, we can. Sure, my image of sitting in the lap of God looking into His eyes might not be possible in reality, but the results of what I would see staring into His eyes is plainly known. God calls us His Children. He says we are blameless and without fault. He has a level of trust in us that seems reckless and shortsighted at times. These facts and many more are spelled out in His word. In essence, we can look into the eyes of God by believing what He says about us in The Bible.

I wish that were enough for me to make my identity be more of the powerhouse of stability that I want it to be. I still fall into pits of despair as I let this world rob me of the joy of knowing who I am. When I wake up - God is still there calling me deeper into who He sees me to be. I'm not any less a victor when I lose my way as far as identity is concerned. God sees me as a victor even when I have bought into the lies that the world feeds me about who I am.

I love what today's Bible reading says on the subject. Check it out with me now.

People will insult you and hurt you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things about you because you follow me. But when they do, you will be blessed. Matthew 5:11-12 (New Century Version)

The world is so good at hurting us. Lies and all kinds of evil things are said and done to us that make victims out of us all. It is when we start believing the lies and begin to believe that the evil will always win that victim thinking takes hold in our lives. It can be so hard to believe we are victors when the evil lies stack up against us.

Good news is that God is so much bigger than the evil behind the lies. One day the words of the evil doers in the world will be silenced. Until that day look at the promise of being called a Child of God in today's reading. You will be blessed! What an amazing promise that is.

I wish I could say with all certainty that that blessing meant that no harm will come to your good life. That just isn't something that can be guaranteed as long as evil is allowed dominion in this world. I do know that blessing has so much more to do with God's presence than it does with the goodies He might give us from time to time. It is when we recognize God's presence in our lives that we have the strength to stand against all the victimizing ways this world works into our lives. It is His presence that makes it possible to be a victor when victory is so absent in our lives.

Our gaze says a lot about our attitude when it comes to victor living and victim thinking. If we allow our gaze to be focused on this world for proof of who we are, victim thinking is going to be the result. If we shift our gaze higher - to the heavens - we begin to see ourselves the way God sees us. It is when we see ourselves from His prospective that we can begin to live this life in the power of victor living God intended for us to have.

As you go about your day, pay attention to what you are looking to for fulfillment and purpose. Don't let the lies of the world take you into deep are dark places. God has told you who you are - now live it out. Be the victor He has called you to be and let the power of that kind of living change the world around you today.

Day 201 - Action

Thoughts that have come from various quotes taken from the book, "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim Based Society" by John H. Hovis. Click here to link directly to the audio file.

**********

"Lack of striving doesn’t mean lack of action. It just means we do all we feel we need to do but leave the results up to God."

As quoted from the book "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim-Based Society" by John H. Hovis Page 79.

I have such a need to be in motion at times. As I sit here writing this presentation, my leg is literally shaking. That shaking doesn't come from being nervous. It isn't happening because I have some neurological condition in my life. The shaking is an old friend to me. It brings a sense of calm that is hard to explain. There isn't a time when I can't remember letting that motion be a comfort in the good times as well as in the bad.

I have to be honest though. My wife finds that shaking quite disconcerting. There are times when we are in bed that she will ask me to stop moving because she is getting sick from the motion. Isn't it interesting how different we all are?

Action in our lives can play such powerful roles. How that action comes about and what we do with that action can be such a varied kind of thing from person to person. Just like anything else in this world, relying on action of any type when it comes to feeling good about ourselves is a strategy filled with victim thinking tendencies.

I have said before that I lean heavily on being busy as a sign that all is well in my life. When I'm not busy, I tend to get worried that something is wrong with me or with God's view of who I am. That is such a victim thinking way of looking at my life and at how God relates to me. It isn't the presence of busyness that proves that I'm OK in this world just like the lack of busyness doesn't mean that I'm not living up to some level of acceptability. Nothing in this world will ever be enough to make us find the kinds of fulfillment that a real and living relationship with God is suppose to bring.

The sad thing is that many of us look to the results of the actions we are involved in to bring a level of proof that we are OK in the eyes of others and of God Himself. It isn't that results aren't important - they are! It is just that the results of our actions have to be left up to God. Why? Because our ways are so different than His.

If I were writing the script of the life of a follower of God it would look so different from what God's reality looks like. I can't tell you how many people I have walked through life with that have had challenges God could have changed in an instant. More importantly, the kinds of changes we were praying for God to make in these people's lives would have brought a level of glory to God unlike anything any of us had ever experienced. Yet, God didn't move in the direction we wanted. Our busyness of praying to God didn't result in what we thought would bring the most glory to His name. He saw His glory coming in a different way.

That's why results have to be left up to God. We just don't have the fullness of perspective when it comes from God's view of our lives. Sure we are to go after all the goodness we can in this life. It is when we rely on the goodness to be what sustains us, or when the goodness is used a proof of who we are that results can be such a victimizing thing in the victor's life.

When it comes to living this life as a victor, today's Bible reading shows us the way.

For you are great and do marvelous deeds;
    you alone are God.
Teach me your way, Lord,
    that I may rely on your faithfulness;
give me an undivided heart,
that I may fear your name.
I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart;
I will glorify your name forever. Psalm 86:10-12 (NIV)

It is as we are taught God's way that we begin to see that results are useless when it comes to our identities. God does marvelous works. Those works happen whether this life is panning out the way we want or not. It is when we let our circumstances be more than what they are suppose to be in our lives that victim thinking comes to rule over us.

If you are facing tough times right now, know this. God doesn't have it out for you. He sees you as a perfect victor in the middle of the victimizing things that are happening to your right now. He isn't punishing you for the badness in your life. He isn't trying to get you to shape up so that He can have relationship with you. You are His Child and the pain you feel, He feels as well. God is in control - hang on to Him as you go through all this world works to bring against you at times.

Bottom line is that action isn't always the answer. Yes, God may be allowing things to come into your life that will motivate you to change. Change always takes action. With that said, action isn't always what God wants in our lives. Sometimes it is in the quiet that can come with being motionless that perspective and power comes. I hope that God doesn't mind that even in those times of stillness, my leg still shakes and that brings me great comfort!

It all comes down to this. God loves you. It isn't the positive results of what you do that proves that love. It is the simple fact that God has spoken His love to you through His actions on the cross. No amount of action on our part will ever come close to the proof of our acceptability that came as a result of Jesus giving His life for you and for me.

As you set a course of action today, remember that God is the power behind the results you will experience. If what you put your hands to doesn't turn out quite the way you intended, let God be God even in that result and watch how your status as a victor comes alive no matter what your day turns out like today.

Day 200 - The Thin Line

Thoughts that have come from various quotes taken from the book, "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim Based Society" by John H. Hovis. Click here to link directly to the audio file.

**********

"Our standing before God requires us to walk a fine line with Him. On one hand we aren’t to think so highly of our standing that we take advantage of God and others in our sin. I have seen victimizers do this in ways that have created victims all throughout The Church and society as well. On the other side, we aren’t to think so lowly of ourselves that we reject the Holy Spirit’s promptings about our righteousness before God."

As quoted from the book "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim-Based Society" by John H. Hovis Page 58.

Identity, or the lack there of, makes us walk a fine line. When we don't know who we are or when we let things of this world dictate the identity we work to portray, victim thinking is waiting for us no matter which side of the line we fall. Living this life is like being a tight rope walker. It doesn't matter which side of the thin line this person falls toward, disaster is always the result.

We walk a fine line between thinking too much of ourselves and thinking too little of ourselves. Not knowing who we are doesn't help us in walking this line out. Just as dangerous as not knowing who we are is living in an identity that we have no business living out in the first place. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the time we all fall in to one of those two scenarios when identity is concerned.

I hope you don't think that means we are hopeless. Well, maybe I do in one sense. We are hopeless if we think our identity is completely up to us to find and live out in this life. God has stacked the deck against us when it comes to this strategy of finding identity in this world.

I'm so glad He has chosen to stack the deck against me in this way. I am literally tired to the bone with trying to make identity work in my life like I have tried for so many years now. It has only been in recent years that I have decided to let what He says about me be all the proof I need to thrive in this world. That has helped me to walk the fine line between thinking too much of myself and thinking too little of who I am in God.

You see life isn't about making big things happen so that I can prove that I am something in this world. Life also isn't about just getting by as circumstances do all they can to dump on my life. Life is all about walking in a power of who I am when things are going well and when things take a turn for the worse. Circumstances can't be controlled to the extent we believe they can. Who we are is something that doesn't have to be swayed by the shifting winds of circumstance like it has in the past for me.

Listen to today's Bible verse as it deals with the stability we can experience as we walk this thin line of life with God.

I will proclaim the name of the Lord.
Oh, praise the greatness of our God!
He is the Rock, his works are perfect,
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God who does no wrong,
upright and just is he. Deuteronomy 32:3-4 (NIV)

He is the rock... His works are perfect... His ways are just... Now that's the kind of stability I need to help me from falling into pride or despair. The good things of life don't come our way because we are deserving. Just as true is the fact that the bad things aren't there because we have fallen short in one way or another. The reality is that this world will do what it will do.

Some of us will succeed in this life in powerful and spectacular ways. Others, with the same intellect, drive and opportunity will fail in just as powerful and spectacular ways. The difference between the victor and the victim thinker has nothing to do with results. The difference will always be found in identity.

The one that succeed might turn out to be one of the biggest victim thinkers you have ever seen. They might find themselves in this position simply because their success didn't rise to the level of impact in their own life to help them deal with the gnawing feeling that they just don't matter. Sure success brings a lot of perks that help us to push those feelings deep down inside of us. The fact remains that money, power, success, position or any of a list of other worldly things will never be enough to make us feel we have arrived when it comes to an identity that makes a difference.

On the flip side, the one that is a worldly failure might be the one that lives out a victor lifestyle unlike anything you have ever seen. It is when we know that we are loved no matter what the score of life turns out to be, that we can experience levels of peace in our soul that just can't be explained. Success isn't the difference when walking that thin life of life. Identity is what makes it possible to make it across that chasm without falling in.

Rest assured, the victor as well as the victim thinker will have ups and downs in this life. Some days we all will feel on top of the world. On others days we will be looking for signs of that truck that seems to have flattened us on the road of life. The difference between victor living and victim thinking comes as we learn how to not let the things of life be what makes a difference in who we are.

As you go about your day, remember God is faithful. He is faithful to make happen all you need today to come into a greater understanding of who you are. Faithfulness has nothing to do with getting the good life you might be seeking from the world today. Faithfulness means that God has said who you are. Let your victor status be all it can be today as you bask in the glory of being a child of the King's.

Day 199 - The Demanding Spirit

Thoughts that have come from various quotes taken from the book, "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim Based Society" by John H. Hovis. Click here to link directly to the audio file.

**********

"But that doesn’t stop me from trying to find formulas to help me get what I WANT out of God in this life. That’s what a formula in relationship to God is all about. It’s a statement of demand that goes something like this: 'God if I do this, then you HAVE to do that.'"

As quoted from the book "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim-Based Society" by John H. Hovis Page 42.

It’s the demanding spirit that makes it possible for victors to move into the dangerous territory of victim thinking. The demanding spirit is what we exhibit when we believe that our needs are more important than what it takes for us to have meaningful relationships in our lives. This is particularly the case when our demanding spirit attempts to make God do what we want Him to do in our lives.

In an effort to take any control we can get in maintaining our good life, we get focused on the reward of doing. This is such a dangerous place for the victor to live. When our focus is on the wrong prize, we get confused. It is that confusion that can enable us to get to where our needs can move us into a place of demand. The demanding victor is doomed to victim thinking at some point in their life.
Today, we have a pretty simple Bible verse to consider.

They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved. Psalm 78:18 (NIV)

The Nation of Israel was stuck in victim mode. Though they had been miraculously rescued from slavery, they were not satisfied with what God was providing as they moved into their promised land. Though God was making food appear for them on a daily basis, they wanted more. Discontent turned to grumbling which turned to demand. Demand always leads to broken relationships. It wasn’t that God abandoned the Israelites; No, the Israelites were on the verge of abandoning God.

The victim thinker living with a demanding spirit will find relationship a very difficult thing to maintain. Relationship with those closest to them will be strained by the demands for the victim thinker’s good life. The very people, including God, who could do the most to help the victim thinker come back to victor living are shut out by the drone of complaints coming from a demanding heart.

The demanding spirit is usually accompanied by an over dependence on formulas. It is the "If I do this then you must do that" kind of approach to relationship that turns a person's needs into demands. When those demands aren't met, the one who has created the formula feels cheated. After all, they upheld their end of the bargain - isn't it only fair that the other person act as the formula commands?

Formulas really don't work when relationship is concerned. That doesn't stop us from trying to make them a part of our connections. Sadly, more relationships have been lost to formula living than just about anything else I can think of. God isn't a big fan of formulas. We shouldn't be either, particularly when relationship is the issues.

If you are seeing challenges in your relationships, particularly your relationship with God, maybe your victim thinking is being fueled by the cries from a demanding spirit. Take a close look at your expectations of others and of God Himself. If you are making demands based on a quid pro quo kind of life, victim thinking is sure to come your way. You are a victor. Your identity is secured. Don’t let the needs of life rob you from the fullness that God has for you as His child.

Make today all about living freely. That freedom comes when you let God be God with all you come into contact with today. Let the fact that He sees you as His victor be all you need to power through your day with as the kinds of Kingdom Building opportunities that only a Child of God could experience.

Day 198 - Amnesia

Thoughts that have come from various quotes taken from the book, "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim Based Society" by John H. Hovis. Click here to link directly to the audio file.

**********

"Christians who have forgotten who they are or, worse yet, who have allowed their roles to change their identity have given up a part of their relationship with God. They have given up a connection through identity that is the very conduit of God’s Power for this world. When we have taken on the role of victim as part of our identity we have, in many ways, forfeited the power of Christ’s work in our lives."

As quoted from the book "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim-Based Society" by John H. Hovis Page 22.

How many times have you forgotten the name of someone you should never forget? I hate to admit it but I’ve forgotten the names of some very close friends at times.  It is so frustrating when important things slip from my memory? Now, I'd like you to think of something really wild. Have you ever looked into the mirror and not known the face of the person staring back at you?

What a horrible event that would be. To not know who you are to the point where you don’t even recognize your own reflection has got to be a scary place to be. When it comes to identity, I’m sad to say that even the reflection in our mirror doesn't tell the entire story. Take a look at today’s Bible reading.

"For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known." 1 Corinthians 13:12 (NIV)

The old adage, “Seeing is believing…” doesn’t hold completely true when it comes to who we really are. The image you see in the mirror isn’t all you are now or all you are going to be when we meet Christ face-to-face. Today’s reading isn’t saying that we can’t know who we are today, it is saying that we can only see a portion of our identity on this side of Heaven.

Child of God, as an identity, covers a wide swath when it comes to who we are. Does anyone truly know what it means to be God’s Child? Just from this Bible verse alone I would have to say, “NO!” The fullness of what it means to be God’s Child is something we will not fully know until we step over the line to eternity.

Sadly, most of us are limiting ourselves to only what we see, know and can experience when it comes to who we are. That’s what it means to allow the roles we play to spell out who we are. When we do this we give up on the Heavenly Power of God to make our roles be all they can be in our lives. Roles are like a mirror - they might give us a glimpse into who we are but they can never tell the entire story.

Today is your chance to live a life of being fully known. Our reading today has that wonderful promise in its closing words. Though we might not fully know who we are, we are fully known as God’s Child - our identity is secure in the hands of the one who made us. Living from that place of power is what makes a victor’s life have impact even when it feels like life is holding us back. Life can’t hold the victor back. Throw off that victim thinking today and live fully known in all you do.

Day 197 - Power Medicine

Thoughts that have come from various quotes taken from the book, "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim Based Society" by John H. Hovis. Click here to link directly to the audio file.

**********

"Until we come to a place where we have been dosed with enough forgiveness to get us free from the offender that has caused us such pain, we will never have the faith to appreciate the potential good in others. Worse yet, we will never be able to see the good in God when we come face to face with all the bad that can happen to us in this world."

As quoted from the book "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim-Based Society" by John H. Hovis Page 215.

There are some days that my faith in the human species is all but gone. Have you ever felt that way? What got you to this point? If you are anything like me, it was all the stupid and damaging things people can do to one another that has made it almost impossible for me to see any good an any person in the world today.

Believe me, I know that this view has been confirmed time and time again by all I hear on the news. People can be radically cruel to one another. Victimhood is alive and well because of the victim thinking tendencies we all seem to gravitate to today in our Victim Based Society. Will this ever change?

I believe it can change. Believe me, it won't be easy. The medicine required to make change happen is a costly and very unpleasant course of action. The treatment for change when it comes to beginning to see the good in my fellow human being requires massive doses of forgiveness.

Forgiveness is a hard pill to swallow. It is worse than any other medication I have ever had to take. Like all other medicines I have seen, it takes time for the medication to work. Forgiveness is that way as well. It takes time for the dose to build up in us in ways where the cause of all the negative feelings is removed. What has to be treated is the issue of offense.

Offense is what makes it so hard to ever believe in any goodness in my fellow man. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't do something that offends me. Usually the offense is pretty silly when compared to some of the horrific things one person can do to another. That really doesn't matter where offense is concerned. The severity of the offense isn't really at issue when it comes to the dose of forgiveness required to get the offense out of our system. The key is to take our medicine until the course of treatment is completed.

That's the only way we will ever stay in the victor's place of seeing goodness in this world. It is when we forgive that we have the best chance at letting those things that happened in the past not control what we do in the future. There will always be reasons for us to need to take our medicine. As long as people let this world drive who they are, offense will be there and the need for forgiveness will always be what is needed for us to live out our victor status.

The Bible is pretty clear on our need for the medicine of forgiveness. Take a look at today's reading with me now.

So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it. Colossians 3:13-14 (MSG)

I love the discussion of a wardrobe in our reading today. Victors are to be clothed in royal garments. Those garments are woven with the threads of compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength and discipline. Garments made of such a fabric is like a bullet-proof vest. They can protect us from the deadly attacks the haters in this world bring our way. Forgiveness helps make our garments function properly. It is the binding that brings this ensemble all together. When we are properly clothed as a victor the world comes to know the power of the word LOVE.

Have you taken your medicine today? I guarantee there has been, is now or will be someone or something that will make it so forgiveness will be required in your life today. Don't miss your dose! The longer you wait to begin your healing regiment the longer it will take for the medicine to do its work. Make the fact that God was quick to forgive you be motivation enough to be quick to forgive. Watch as the power of Love flows through you in world changing ways as you get offense out of your life using the power of forgiveness today.

Day 196 - Does It Really Matter?

Thoughts that have come from various quotes taken from the book, "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim Based Society" by John H. Hovis. Click here to link directly to the audio file.

**********

"I believe the single most important fact that makes us think we are victors even when, in similar circumstances, others fall into victim thinking is that victors base their identity on an eternal perspective."

As quoted from the book "Victor - Breaking Free From a Victim-Based Society" by John H. Hovis Page 188.

Do you give much thought to eternity? I don't know if it is my age or what but I think about eternity a lot. What will this time be like? Does eternity feel like a long time? Will we be bored in heaven? Will there be carne-asada burritos in heaven? You may think that last question is kind of irrelevant - I don't. Forever is a long time to go without your favorite food.

All we know is what we have experienced here on earth. Even the things others teach us just don't do it for us as compared to actually going through the process of life ourselves. When my wife was pregnant with our daughter, she asked someone how she would know when she was in full labor. This wise woman just looked at Barb smiled and said, "You will just know!"

Some things in life you just can't explain. They have to be experienced fully in order for you to know what those things will be like. I think the same goes for eternity. We just won't know what that life will look like until this one is gone. That fact shouldn't keep us from having a perspective based on eternal concepts.

I believe perspective is the key to living out this life with as much power and presence our victor status affords us. It is when we allow our perspective to be swayed by the short term that we place ourselves in situations where power is wanting and victim thinking is quick to appear.  Perspective is such an important concept for those of use living the life of a victor.

Perspective doesn't guarantee that we will get all the answers. Perspective does let us see things in a different light. Let me give you a simple example to show you what I mean.

I love getting a job done. There are few things more satisfying than to be able to check off something from my long list of things to do. Bringing things to some level of completion has really been a driving force in my life from time to time.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. It is when I am stuck in victim thinking that being driven to get the job done can cause me to do things in ways that can make victims of those closest to me. I can remember situations where I was right in the middle of a project. It didn't matter how insignificant that project was, my drive to finish that project made me do and say things to my wife and children that gave them the impression that they didn't matter. Fact is, they didn't matter to me at that moment. Finishing the project mattered more than they did. I really hurt them with that kind of attitude and for that I am truly sorry.

How would perspective have helped me in that situation? I'm now trying to look at the things I do with an attitude of what will it matter in 100 years. You have to realize that a century is but a drop in the bucket compared to eternity, but that time-frame is long enough to help me let perspective play an important role in my life.

Here's how thinking about my project with this kind of timeline helps me. There are very few things I have done or will do that will amount to a hill of beans 100 years from now. Most of what I have done will not matter to anyone that far down the road. What I have learned is that what does make a difference for the future is relationship. If what I am doing is interrupted by someone needing connection, I'm getting better at recognizing the opportunity to step into eternity by allowing relationship be what drives me.

I happen to believe that investing in relationship makes the difference over the long run. At least that's how I believe God sees it. How can I say that? The Bible backs me up on that. Check out today's reading with me now.

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10 (NIV)

I don't see a whole lot of getting things done in this verse. Instead, I see a bunch of love. That love is emphasized with words that scream relationship. Words like, us, son, our, and we speak to connection. I believe God is much more concerned with connection than He is with getting things done. That's a lesson I have had to learn the hard way but am starting to see how this eternal perspective makes all the sense in the world when compared to the victim thinking ways I so easily adopt in my life.

This is but one example of applying an eternal perspective in all that you do. When you let life be filtered through eternity things just look different. Our responses to things, even bad things that may come our way, take on a different role than they would when we view them through the lens of this moment.

I don't think we can fully live out this life as a victor without a perspective that goes way beyond our lives here on earth. That is particularly the case when our identities are concerned. Looking to things in this world for substantiation as to who we are just doesn't cut it as far as I can tell. I need something more permanent than things I can do in this world to prove who I am. I need to be more aware of my eternal nature and let that be the foundation from which I can build my identity.
